This page is written for the guest: the person who scans a code at a table and pays a bill. It explains what we collect, what the restaurant can see, and what we never hold at all.

The short version

We collect what is needed to show you the correct bill, complete your payment, and keep a record you can look up later. We never receive or store your card number. We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for advertising.

What we never hold

Your card number, expiry date and security code go directly to a licensed payment processor. They do not pass through chequemate’s systems and they never reach the restaurant. Neither we nor the restaurant can charge your card outside a payment you confirm.

What we collect

Payment and bill records. The restaurant, table and itemised bill you opened; which items or amount you chose to pay; the amount charged; any tip; any convenience fee; and whether the payment succeeded.

Account details. Creating a chequemate account requires some personal details about you, including your name, contact details and date of birth.

Technical records. Ordinary server and payment logs needed to run the service, keep it secure, and investigate a payment that went wrong.

What the restaurant can see

The restaurant sees what it needs to run its floor and close its books: which items and bills have been paid, the amounts, and tips owed to its staff.

On a shared table it sees contributions against that bill. It does not receive your history at other restaurants, and it never receives your card details.

Who else we share with

Our payment processor, so your payment can be taken. Our hosting and database providers, so the service can run. Anyone we are legally required to disclose to. That is the whole list.

How long we keep it

Payment records are kept as long as financial, tax and anti-fraud rules require. Account details are kept while your account exists.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from inside the app. When you do, we erase the personal fields on your profile — your name, email, phone number, date of birth, nickname and username.

We keep the payment records themselves, with the profile anonymised, because a completed payment is a financial record that we and the restaurant are required to be able to account for. Those records no longer identify you.

Your choices

Write to us and you can ask for a copy of your data, a correction, or deletion. We will ask for enough detail to be confident the account is yours before we act.

Changes

If we change how any of this works we will update this page and the date at the top of it.
